Hraunfossar Waterfall (Lava Falls) is a unique collection of countless rivulets cascading from a giant lava field (Hallmundarhraun) into the Hvita River over a distance of about 900 meters. This lava field flowed from the eruption of one of the volcanoes beneath the Langjokull Glacier. September visits are enhanced by the autumn colors of the moss and foliage. Several viewpoints along the shoreline offer incredible perspectives.
Rather than being a "traditional" waterfall, Barnafoss is actually a series of rapids on the Hvita River as it churns and twists through a narrow canyon (rocky basalt chute) and may be viewed from above. In addition, when looking down, the ground reveals a plethora of colorful and stunning foliage.
