Kerlingarfjoll, a mountain range in the central Highlands, is known for its colorful rhyolite peaks and extensive geothermal area (Hveradalir) with its valley of steam vents, hot springs, boiling and hissing mud pools, geysers and hiking trails. Sometimes rising steam seems to replace glacier-capped ice on mountains making it difficult to tell which is which; while hot water surging beneath the surface interacting with ground minerals result in unique patterns and colors. A truly amazing experience.
