South Iceland has a plethora of diverse natural wonders. Some are well-known waterfalls (see Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss Galleries). Others are not as well known (Faxafoss, Irarfoss, and Foss-a-Sidu); still others are nameless and/or hidden.
The vast Eldhraun Lava Field, over 220 sq. miles (565 square kms) is the largest in the world. Dating back to a late 1700s volcanic eruption, this stunningly surreal place is like no other. Note that in early Autumn, moss retains its grayish-green color; however later, moss color changes to a light brown-tan.
Solheimajokull, an outlet tongue of Myrdalsjokull, offers easy access and guided glacier hiking experiences. And in late Fall and Winter, the scenic wonder of the Northern Lights arrives.
