Located in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the Okefenokee Swamp is a shallow, vast, peat-filled wetland on the Georgia/Florida border. It has been described a bog inside a huge, saucer-shaped depression that was once part of the ocean floor. Peat deposits up to 15 feet thick cover much of the swamp floor. Its reflective waters mirror the vast wilderness of its islands, lakes, jungles, forest and prairies. Boat tours and wooden walkways are available for exploring.
