One of the more amazing aspects of lava is its many forms—from black sand and black pebble beaches, to hexagonal columns, to moss covered fields (some with emerging waterfalls), to towering pillars and formations. Molten rock, known as magma, is created by geothermal energy deep within the Earth. Once magma breaks through to the earth's surface, it is known as lava. Basalt is an igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of lava exposed at the surface.
