The Haukadalur Valley (i. e., Geothermal Area), is home to Geysir the place that gives its name to spouting hot springs all over the world. Geysir (mostly dormant now since an earthquake a few years ago) and Strokkur are the biggest geysers here, with Strokkur erupting every few minutes, up to 30 meters into the air. All around this area, which has been active for over 1000 years, are many bubbling hotpots and superheated streams that leave multi-colored residues on the ground and fumaroles emanating steam and gas.
