Studlagil Canyon, with its amazing basalt columns, is one of the most stunning places in Iceland. There are two ways to access Studlagil—the west side of the river with a newly built 240 metal stair viewing platform is sort of an “appetizer” offering views of the gorge and the basalt canyon from above. The images in this gallery were made here. The major “entre”, however, is the east side of the river with a trailhead for hiking (the two hour there and back, 5 kilometers) into the canyon, home to some of the most fascinating basalt columns in Iceland. This east side access tops the list for my next visit to Iceland. Until then, enjoy the “appetizer”.
