Dimmuborgir (The Black Fortress), near Lake Mývatn, is an enormous lava field composed of eerie and unique jagged black lava pillars, formations and caves formed in a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. There are numerous walking paths with similar lava rock formations making it easy to get lost if one doesn't follow the marked routes. The colors of autumn provide an engaging enhancement to this wonder of nature.
