Irazu, the star of IrazuNational Park, is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica at 11,260 feet (3,432 meters) above sea level. It has several craters including Diego de la Haya with its bright green 300 meter lake. The area around the crater is barren, lacking any vegetation as the ashy earth below yields evidence of previous volcanic eruptions. One advantage of the extreme elevation of Irazú is that it’s often above and/or within the clouds.
