Forests and woods, large areas of land dominated by trees, provide habitat for plants and animals, the oxygen needed for our survival and timber for products used daily including in our homes. The primary difference between forests and woods is the density of trees and the amount of sunlight reaching the forest floor. Forests typically have a denser canopy (60-100% coverage, creating more shade); woods have a more open canopy (25-60% coverage, creating more sunlight and support a greater diversity of ground-dwelling plants and animals).
