Rather than being a "traditional" waterfall, Barnafoss is actually a series of rapids on the Hvita River as it churns and twists through a narrow canyon (rocky basalt chute) and may be viewed from above. In addition, when looking down, the ground reveals a plethora of colorful and stunning foliage.
